How to Make a Bag for Your American Girl Doll

Does your American Girl Doll need a Bag for the Gym? A Tote for the Beach? A Purse for those Accessories? This is a basic straightforward method for creating a cute and unique doll accessory that can be used for several purposes. It can be made to any size you want and from many different materials. We've include a couple of videos to show some of the uniqueness that you can make on your own. You don't have to be crafty - it's that simple. and cute. Make an adorable purse out of denim, lace, cardboard, you an even use a Tic Tac container or Juicie. Use your creativity to imagine how you want it to look and you will be amazed at how you can make a bag to match all your American Girl Doll outfits.

These steps are not required for every bag. These steps listed are for a sewn or glued fabric bag. See the videos for more ideas on how to make a bag for your American Girl Doll.

Steps to Make a Doll Bag.

Cut 4 pieces of material from fabric:
One 3 1/4" x 2 1/4" (8.25cm x 5.7cm) rectangle (flap liner)
One 3 1/4" x 2" (8.25cm x 5cm) rectangle (front)
One 3 1/4" x 4 1/2" (8.25cm x 11.4cm) rectangle (back with flap)
One 15" x 1 3/4" (38cm x 4.4cm) rectangle (strap)
Optionally you can cut an additional piece for the trim 3 1/4" (8.25cm) wide.

Next, press one long edge of the flap lining 1/4" (6mm) to the wrong side and stitch. Repeat this step with the front piece.

Use your ruler to draw a line 3/4" (19mm) from the the short edge of the back with flap. Center your piece of trim over line and stitch in place. This step is optional.

Sew the flap liner, with all the right sides together all the way to the top of back flap where sides that are not sewn and top edges. Ensure that you attach the flap liner to the side of the back with flap with trim. Sew the front to the bottom of the back flap the identical way.

Cross sew through the layers along long sides of back with flap. Trim the seam to along the cross stitching. This will avoid too much fraying. Cut off corners close to stitching, turn to the right side and press.

Press the long edges of the handles 1/4" (6mm) to the wrong side. Repeat so that folded edges meet in the middle. Press again so the outside pressed edges meet. Stitch.

Place the ends of the handle 1/2" (12.7mm) within the inside of the top of the front and stitch in place.

Fold flap down and press. Enjoy your new doll purse!

More Suggestions

Try using different sizes of ribbon or pipe cleaners for the strap.
Use the side of the scissors to press and smooth out the corners.
Use Hot Glue or Glue Sticks instead of sewing thread.
Using different sizes of materials or items that support the fabric can add to different types of bags, like a doll backpack for school.

About 1 foot of medium weight woven fabric
Matching thread
Ribbon
Sewing machine (alternatively; needle and thread; glue stick, hot glue gun)
Ruler
Scissors
Pen or fabric marker
Tape
Construction Paper
